Mapping your business future
Richard Benton from the International Antarctic Centre talks to Glen Senior from The Small Business Company about defining his vision for his business and how he sticks to the plan and keeps his staff involved.
Richard describes his own business road map – a one-page document summarising his vision into a one-line “big, audacious goal”, and then detailing how long it will take to reach that goal, and the tools needed along the way.
Also discussed is the need for shared vision based on team input, regularly engaging with your staff as people, and tailoring the stepping stones toward your vision to your specific business.

Buying a business
Bill and Duncan advise on the questions you should ask both the vendor and yourself when buying a business, and the due diligence process you should follow – that is, the legal, financial and general research you should do on the business you are interested in buying. Vendor assistance periods (retaining the vendor after the sale to access their knowledge) and restraint of trade clauses (legal paperwork that stops a vendor opening a similar business next door to the one you have just bought) are also discussed.

Global expansion
Glen Senior, CEO at The Small Business Company, talks to James Armstrong from Research Review, a medical publishing company that compiles the latest medical research in various fields and adds specialist comment, to help health professionals keep up-to-date with the most important studies.
James tells how there is a market for his business’s products globally, yet because they are a small business, they have sometimes used licensees in other countries as this is an easier way to enter a market. James and Glen discuss the importance of finding like-minded people through your networks, especially people who have industry experience and credibility and are passionate about the industry. Other issues touched on are being aware of the fact you are sharing your IP, minimum performance agreements, and using your licensees abroad as a reassuring local face on a product that has come from elsewhere.

Exiting your business
Glen Senior, CEO at The Small Business Company, talks to James Armstrong from Research Review, a medical publishing company that compiles the latest medical research in various fields and adds specialist comment, to help health professionals keep up-to-date with the most important studies.
Glen and James discuss the need for an exit strategy, and the need to communicate from early on with your fellow shareholders about the impact your leaving will have on them (and the impact their exit will have on those who stay). Even if it’s just you running your business, an exit strategy is still needed, so that you don’t find yourself in a position where you sell quickly, simply because you’ve had enough. Continual expansion to keep increasing the business’s value is also touched on.
