Small but daily habits help a clothing manufacturer cut power use.

Changing behaviour to save energy

Leedsafe makes clothing and equipment. They design, manufacture, source and dispatch products that keep Kiwis safe, visible and comfortable at work.

When the Christchurch-based company moved location a few years ago, they made other changes too. They focused on nudging staff to make small but daily energy savings. With the help of checklists, the team now makes sure everything’s off at the end of the day. This includes aircon, heat pumps, lights and workstations.

Along with electric forklifts and LED lighting, the changes add up to an 11% reduction in power use. It’s about the amount an average Kiwi home uses each year. Plus, it means a cost saving of 24%.

“We’ve reduced our consumption and costs with small wins,” says Wayne Collingwood, General Manager of Sales and Operations. “But we can always do more while keeping our workplace comfortable.”
