If you import or sell consumer products containing sand, there is new guidance from Product Safety.
Recent product recalls in New Zealand and overseas have found asbestos in some sand-based items, including children’s toys, art sets and household products.
Recent testing has shown that asbestos fibres can be present in some sand products and may not be visible to the naked eye.
According to Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora, potential health risks arise if these fibres become airborne.
That means even if your products appear safe, there may still be hidden risks.
As a business, you’re responsible for making sure the products you supply are safe for consumers.
What's in the guidance
The new guidance will help you to review testing practices and whether they align with current best-practice expectations.
The guidance outlines:
- your legal responsibilities for product safety
- recommended best-practice testing methods using accredited laboratories
- what to do if asbestos is identified, including removing products from sale and initiating recalls.
Retailers, online sellers, and importers are encouraged to review the guidance and ensure appropriate testing and safety processes are in place.
Many businesses already have strong product safety practices in place. If sand is part of your product range, taking these steps now can help you stay ahead of potential issues and keep your customers safe.
