Heat recovery saves emissions and cash

Bakels Edible Oils supplies oil products across New Zealand. They’re focused on producing fine foods while reducing their environmental impact.

The company has a refinery in Mount Maunganui. There, they use process heat to turn raw materials into oils. This uses a lot of energy, so the efficiency of their boiler system is essential.

To reduce waste and save money, the team installed a new heat exchanger. This captures excess steam and heat and returns both to heat the boiler. By recovering this energy, the company uses around 6% less natural gas and produces 5% less CO2.
